Gathering
Artwork for Week 1

This work has grown out of the nature of the ‘processing’ of asylum seekers by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and the Refugee Review Tribunal. It speaks of the waiting that is inevitable when people seek asylum. It will consist of a mass of chairs placed at the edges of the water on Port Phillip Bay at South Melbourne.

There will be a tension between the formality and permanency that these chairs suggest, and the removal of some seats to symbolise a difficulty in "sitting" or "staying/remaining/
stopping". The seats of other chairs will be replaced with images that tell the story of asylum seekers coming to Australian shores. Stories will be collected from the community.

This work will be accompanied for one night only by a performance of song about the refugee experience. This will be a free performance.

Site: South Melbourne Beach
