Artwork for Week 5

A long carpet made from old suitcases, deconstructed and then sewn together will line a bayside pier. Bands of colour, texture and embededded objects create a different type of 'red carpet' connecting the land with the water. At the end of the pier a light will shine out and a recoding of singing in various languages will communicate with the viewer.

This work is a meditation on the journey made across water, and the responsibility of each country to offer a ‘beacon’ to people fleeing conflict and persecution in their homelands.

Site: South Melbourne/Middle Park pier
