Queue Jumpers
Artwork for Week 2

Lining the Elwood foreshore an extended queue of figures rise from the water’s edge to the top of the beacon. Upon each figure hangs a jumper collected from the community. Strands of wool connect occasional figures. Some smaller figures flank a larger one creating family groupings. Colour and repetition will make this work visually exciting.

This work is concerned by the misguided belief that there are queues that asylum seekers must join in order to be granted entry and safe haven in Australia. The reality is that many countries from which people flee have no Australian Embassies and no place to apply for refugee status.
